Grimm Fairy Tale Series

Each print in this series was hand-printed by the artist, using either relief or screen printing techniques. For the relief print, a carved woodblock was inked with a brayer and then printed onto archival paper by hand or with a printing press. For the screen prints, the image was hand-drawn with India ink onto a transparent acetate film which was then exposed onto a silkscreen, using the photo emulsion process, to create an intricate stencil on the silk mesh. Ink was then squeegeed through the mesh, allowing the artist to transfer the image onto the printing paper.
McCannell gives special credit to German sculptor Ignatius Taschner, whose charming stone carvings of characters from the Grimm Fairy Tales surround the Märchenbrunnen (Fairytale Fountain) in Berlin, Germany and provided the thematic and compositional foundation for McCannell’s series of fairy tale prints. The artist also credits the Brothers Grimm for writing the classic fairy tales on which Taschner’s sculptures are based (including the lesser-known 1819 version of ‘Hansel and Gretel’, that has the children escaping on the back of a helpful duck!)

Mixerball Series
This series of monoprints was inspired by shadows cast by stainless steel mixer balls.

My Process: Separate polyester lithography plate were drawn and hand printed, using a wooden spoon. The shadow shapes were cut from rubylith film and exposed onto a silkscreen, using photo emulsion. The transparent shadows were then screen printed over the lithographic prints.
Each individual print is 22"x30". Twelve prints are mounted together as a 'wall quilt'. The full display is 90" tall x 88" wide.

Snow Tracks Series
This series of monoprints was inspired by patterns of tire tracks I observed in a parking lot after a Michigan snow storm.
The works are designed to be displayed either as a grouping of eight 21"x30" monoprints ("Snow Tracks - L") or twelve 15"x21" monoprints ("Snow Tracks - S"). Individual prints are shown as details, but are not available for individual sale.
